    Global Talents Digital

GLOBAL TALENTS DIGITAL

Мероприятие проходит при поддержке и участии крупнейших некоммерческих организаций со всего мира: Fashion Revolution, Global Fashion Exchange и The Sustainable Angle (Великобритания); Фонд «Второе дыхание» (Россия); Redress Design Award (Гонконг, Китай); Impact Fashion Show и Remake (США); Fashion Takes Action (Канада); XSProject (Индонезия); Good On You (Австралия) и другие, которые активно развивают идеи устойчивого развития в области моды.

Национальная палата моды в сотрудничестве с Japan Fashion Week Organization, South African Fashion Week, Kampala Fashion Week, Lagos Fashion Week, São Paolo Fashion Week, Indonesian Fashion Designers Association, Fashion Design Council of India и другими представит 65 брендов из 23 стран, работающих в одном или нескольких направлениях, таких как upcycling, recycling, ethical fashion, slow fashion, zero waste и digital wear.

Global Talents Digital?

Не заскучать: дополненная реальность, Instagram-маски, see now buy now

At 98, Pierre Cardin Holds the Secret to What’s Next in Fashion

    style points

Style Points is a new weekly column about how fashion intersects with the wider world.

All designers have an obsession; Pierre Cardin’s is the circle. From the moon to a spacesuit’s globular helmet, the shape fascinates him. You can see it in his work, namely the circular dresses he’s designed, and even in his home: one of his residences, the Palais Bulles outside Cannes, is studded with literal bubbles. The appeal of the circle, the 98-year-old designer says in the new documentary House of Cardin, is that it’s «infinite.» «A square, a rectangle, a triangle has an end,» he says. «But a circle is a continuation.»

This fixation on infinity dominated some of Cardin’s most famous ’60’s designs. He was so besotted with the space program that he even made a trip to NASA, where he became the first civilian to don one of their spacesuits. While his futuristic designs didn’t go on to become everyday wear, they certainly came to influence the work of experimental designers long after him. Would we have Lady Gaga’s plastic VMA’s bubble shield, if not for Cardin’s influence?

The documentary, directed by P. David Ebersole and Todd Hughes, includes aficionados like Naomi Campbell (wearing a Mod-chic vintage Cardin look) and Jean-Paul Gaultier singing the designer’s praises. Cardin was already a disruptor back when Silicon Valley was just a valley. And at a time when we’re all now peering uncertainly through frosted glass at the future of fashion, the designer’s exuberant embrace of all things new feels like a template for future innovation.

Cardin, along with his contemporaries André Courrèges and Paco Rabanne, embodied a kind of techno-optimism that, while it feels very remote today, still feels tinged with excitement. He experimented with then-new synthetic materials like plastic and his own creation «Cardine.» He favored freeing silhouettes that stood away from the body. His experiments weren’t just aesthetic. He also did away with many of the traditional ways of thinking, like embracing ready-to-wear and the Youthquake as opposed to the then-dominant couture establishment.

This content is imported from YouTube. You may be able to find the same content in another format, or you may be able to find more information, at their web site.

Cardin’s most on-target prediction was that licensing would be the future. He put his name on everything from mattresses and answering machines. The conventional wisdom held that doing this would dilute his fashion brand. Cardin responded, «Yes, maybe. But this is how I see the future.» The licensing business ended up being the smartest decision he ever made; it gave him the revenue to keep his business completely independent.

He was also ahead of his time in popularizing the idea of a «lifestyle brand,» designing his own furniture and rugs, and even a car, the Cardin Javelin. We’ve now seen designers from Giorgio Armani to Ralph Lauren branch into the food world, but Cardin was the one who helped make that kind of move seem commonplace. After being rejected from the Paris restaurant Maxim’s for wearing a turtleneck instead of a dress shirt and bow tie, the designer went on to enact the ultimate revenge: he bought the restaurant, and still owns it today.

He also embraced inclusivity long before that was a term, casting Black and Asian models in his shows at a time when very few designers did so. «He was extremely instrumental in being one of the designers to use models of diversity,» Campbell explains in the film. «So, for that, I thank him.» Jenny Shimizu talks about how important it was for her to see Asian models like Hiroko Matsumoto on his runway and how that informed her modeling career.

Right now, as we brace ourselves for a partly virtual fashion month and a sea of unknowns, designers are unsure whether to play it safe or invent new ways of doing things. Cardin would probably urge them to go for it. Try out that wild idea or that trippy virtual show. Put that crazy garment on the runway. See what happens!

As the composer Jean-Michel Jarre says of Cardin in the film, «Like all great futurists, [his] work will take on more and more meaning in the future.» Cardin wasn’t creating clothes for the present. He was creating them for the perfect future that existed only in his mind’s eye. And rather than wait for it to happen, he made it a reality.

House of Cardin is now in virtual theaters and will be available on demand beginning September 15.

  • At Ally Maki’s Asian American Girl Club, All Are Welcome

At Ally Maki’s Asian American Girl Club, All Are Welcome

Long before Ally Maki appeared in movies and TV shows like Toy Story 4, Cloak & Dagger, and Wrecked, the Japanese American actress was hitting the club. And no, not the high heels, music-blaring, vodka cran kind of club, but actual extracurriculars. «When I was younger, I was totally the club girl, and not the club girl who’s going to the club, but the activities girl,» she tells ELLE.com over Zoom. «My mom put me in every after school activity: Brownies, Girl Scouts, baseball, drama, everything.»

As a fellow club girl and Asian American, I knew what it was like being thrown into activity after activity, hoping something would stick—and being disappointed when it didn’t. «In every club that was designed to be inclusive, I always felt excluded,» Maki explains. «Now as an adult, I look back and I get it. It was because there was no one there who looked like me. There was no one there who shared that depth of experience and identity.»

    MaiLinh Nguyen

In 2018, Maki founded Asian American Girl Club, her answer to the exclusion she felt growing up and experiences even now, as an actress in Hollywood. The fashion and lifestyle brand aims to redefine the modern Asian American woman through normalization and unity. AAGC’s popular Instagram account showcases its vibrant members, proudly wearing the brand’s T-shirts. «I wanted to change the narrative of what a club should feel like, what a club can be for you, your self-worth, identity and confidence,» Maki adds.

Ahead, Maki talks AAGC, her special relationship with Olivia Munn, and why it’s important for Asian Americans to be allies to the Black community.

What prompted you to start Asian American Girl Club?

It was really after Crazy Rich Asians came out. That morning, I remember looking on Twitter and it was just this explosion of support and excitement around this movie that was the first all Asian American cast I’d seen in my lifetime. I had this glass-shattering moment of, if this is possible, what else is possible for us as a community? What I wanted to dive further into was Asian American women.

How did your experiences as an actress help inform this project?

Well, I grew up in Kirkland, Washington, as the only Asian American within my town. I dreamed of being Tiffani Amber Thiessen, these California girls. And when I moved to LA to pursue acting, all of a sudden these boxes were put around me. «Oh no, you’re not that. You’re going to play the sidekick or the best friend or the girl who loves math or the over-sexualized ninja girl who does kung fu.»

With female friendship, especially among Asian American women, I felt like we were so separate from each other. When you’re in the industry and you’re all trying to fight for that one role, it does end up feeling like The Hunger Games. You start to look at your own community as your enemy, which is completely wrong. We’re actually going to be so much stronger if we unite and work together, collaborate, and share our thoughts and feelings.

What’s it like seeing the community grow and be embraced by so many women?

It’s absolutely incredible. When we launched, I had no idea what it was going to be. I was with a couple of people and they were like, «Just release the logo, see what happens.» So at 10:30 at night one night, we dropped a logo, made an Instagram.

The next morning, our inbox, DMs, were flooded with girls from all over who were writing these college-style dissertations on identity and what this meant to them. They were like, «We don’t know what this is either, but we just are so happy that this exists.» From there, the shirts were really just this expression of friendship. «Hey, I see you. Here’s a shirt, let’s rock this together proudly.» I’ve been taking the first two years to really get to know the community, taking a very multi-generational approach.

Olivia Munn is a huge supporter of the brand. How did she become an ambassador?

She’s so proud of her Asian identity. We connected through our friend, Amanda Ngyuen. We were together helping support Rise, Amanda’s foundation for sexual assault victims. She was like, «Hey girl, do you want to go to lunch?» She literally hit me up in the DMs, and I love that because I always say, I go down in the DMs, but only with female friendships.

So we ended up going out to sushi and through that lunch, we were just like, «Oh my gosh, I totally see you.” And it was funny, she was like, «Wait, hold on. You founded Asian American Girl Club? I just put in an order last week.» And she showed me her receipt. She was already a fan of the brand and since then, she’s been an incredible supporter.

Growing up, I never had anything like AAGC, where I could view myself in a really cool, contemporary way. How did you create that space?

A huge facet of our mission is normalization of the modern Asian American woman. A few years ago, I would search the #AsianAmerican hashtag, and it would be pictures that I didn’t feel fully expressed the plethora and incredibleness of Asian American women. So I wanted to be able to say, if you go on Instagram, we are flooding you with images of what we can be and how beautiful we are.

And that’s why we have the undefinable statement because you can’t define us. We are not in boxes. We can be anything that we want. You see Sandra Oh nominated for an Emmy, you see journalists, of course doctors, writers, authors, but really across the gamut, we’re killing it and we’ve been here. My family is four generations, so we’ve been here for so long.

AAGC has been very outspoken about Asian Americans being good allies to the Black community. Why was it important to get that message out?

There’s so many instances in history where the Black community has shown up for the Asian American community. And I think we have this platform, we just need to tell people and encourage them to learn, because we’re not reading about it in our history books.

For me, it’s the biggest privilege to be able to share stories, especially the [story of] Japanese American people, but also to use my voice to become an ally for the Black Lives Matter movement and for the Black community.

There is no denying that Cardi B is a cultural institution—her most recent song, «WAP» with Megan Thee Stallion, managed to make waves last month amid a news-heavy summer (to put it lightly). Now, she’s taking her rightful place overlooking the city of Paris in Balenciaga’s fall campaign, which just happens to be hung on the exterior of The Musée du Louvre.

Cardi has shown her love for the French brand helmed by Demna Gvasalia in the past, rapping in her 2018 song «I Like It»: «I like stunting, I like shining / I like million dollar deals / Where’s my pen? Bitch I’m signin’ / I like those Balenciagas, the ones that look like socks.» Now, Balenciaga is showing her love right back.

The brand cast some of the Balenciaga creative team, including friends of the brand, stylists and designers, but it was the first time since Gvasalia took the helm that it enlisted a celebrity for a campaign—including Cardi B and artist Eliza Douglas. The images are all self-shot, wearing the new collection in spaces the cast were quarantining during late spring, far away from fashion studios and sets—displaying a realism that loses the glossy production hallmarks that come from a traditional campaign.

There are models amid backyard foliage and stuffed animals, on couches, bicycles, treadmills, and paper-strewn beds—all the spaces familiar to so many who stayed at home for so many months.

For Cardi’s billboard shot, her first high-fashion advertisement, she’s dressed in a slinky black gown and lying on a lawn in front of a playground slide with children’s toys surrounding her—the modern work-from-home mom gone high fashion. Your sweatpants could never.

Национальная палата моды в сотрудничестве с Japan Fashion Week Organization, South African Fashion Week, Kampala Fashion Week, Lagos Fashion Week, São Paolo Fashion Week, Indonesian Fashion Designers Association, Fashion Design Council of India и другими представит 65 брендов из 23 стран, работающих в одном или нескольких направлениях, таких как upcycling, recycling, ethical fashion, slow fashion, zero waste и digital wear.

Не заскучать: дополненная реальность, Instagram-маски, see now buy now

  • Fall Style Is About Comfort and Versatility For This Beauty Editor

Fall Style Is About Comfort and Versatility For This Beauty Editor

This fall will likely feel pretty different than last year. For starters, you might be wrapped up in your favorite scarf on your couch, instead of throwing it on for your commute. But some of your go-to items for this season needn’t change just because you’re spending more time at home.

Take it from beauty expert and editor, Maya Allen—her fall essentials encompass the most important parts of her personal style: versatile pieces that make her feel confident and comfortable.

    Evie Loafer

Whether she’s working or just hanging out at home, a pair of comfy flats with arch support is a must for the beauty expert. Allen’s pick? The Evie Loafer by Vionic—the classic black leather shoe with a pop of gold can easily be dressed up or down.

Allen pairs them with a chic blazer and jeans for a casual, but polished look during the work day, and then swaps out the outfit for a cozy sweater dress. How happy are we that chic loungewear is having a serious moment, by the way?

    Adela Sneaker

When it’s time to leave her apartment (mask-on, always), Allen likes to break out a pair of statement sneakers with leather pants and a cardigan. The Vionic Adela Sneaker in Black Metallic is a classier take on the chunky sneaker trend, but with heal to toe comfort technology. These sneakers are super versatile so Allen also wears hers with bold prints, like a leopard print maxi dress.

Check out the video to see each of Allen’s go-to outfits for fall.

  • New Podcast ‘Shoemaker of Dreams’ Chronicles the Legendary Life of Salvatore Ferragamo

New Podcast ‘Shoemaker of Dreams’ Chronicles the Legendary Life of Salvatore Ferragamo

    salvatore ferragamo

    Courtesy of Salvatore Ferragamo

A new podcast series is pulling back the curtain on the life of Salvatore Ferragamo. Before founding his eponymous Italian label, Ferragamo was an apprentice shoemaker and designer to the stars. His journey from Italy to Hollywood and back again is chronicled in a new 22-chapter podcast, Shoemaker of Dreams.

Based on Ferragamo’s own 1957 memoir of the same name, stars including Stanley Tucci, Caitriona Balfe, Isabella Rossellini, Jessica Alba, Michelle Monaghan, and others voice different periods of his life. In the years before his 1960 death, Ferragamo reflected on his experiences in fashion and beyond. His recollections were then transcribed into the autobiography.

This content is imported from Instagram. You may be able to find the same content in another format, or you may be able to find more information, at their web site.

This is one of several recent projects to explore the origins of Ferragamo’s story and his lasting legacy. The podcast arrives shortly before the premiere The Shoemaker of Dreams documentary on September 6. Directed by Luca Guadagnino (Call Me By Your Name), the doc features appearances by director Martin Scorsese and Ferragamo’s late wife Wanda Miletti. In conjunction with these releases, Electa is republishing the designer’s autobiography with a new book cover. Earlier this year, the brand released a social media trivia game about significant moments in Ferragamo’s history.

The podcast series is available now on Spotify, SoundCloud and Apple iTunes.

  • Precious Lee, Jodie Turner-Smith, and Addison Rae Star in Skims’ One-Year Anniversary Campaign

Precious Lee, Jodie Turner-Smith, and Addison Rae Star in Skims’ One-Year Anniversary Campaign

When Skims launched in 2019, the shape-enhancing garment line featuring bras, shorts, and bodysuits quickly became a must-have staple. Comfy loungewear knits and new shapewear silhouettes in a wide range of shades soon followed. In 2020, Skims ultra-breathable pointelle fibers and technologically innovative fabrics remain a hit among shoppers. Now, in celebration of Skims’ upcoming one-year anniversary, Kim Kardashian West is launching a new Skims campaign as an ode to her devotees by featuring eight lucky customers alongside some of her famous friends.

Launching on September 10, one year from the day Skims first debuted, the anniversary campaign further drives home Skim’s brand ethos: «Solutions for every body.» Of the varying bodies included in the campaign, KKW recruited Lala Anthony, Precious Lee, Rumer Willis, Jodie Turner-Smith, the Hamlin Sisters—Amelia Gray and Delilah Belle—as well as Tik Tok star and Kourtney Kardashian’s new BFF, Addison Rae, and Yovanna Ventura to showcase Skims’ bestselling Solutionwear™ and Fits Everybody collections.

In the accompanying videos, shot by Kanye West’s longtime collaborator Vanessa Beecroft, the campaign stars are seen lounging around in a room covered with previous Skims campaigns, doing what normal folks do on any given day—kneel on a bed and ignore phone calls (Rumer), stretch (Addison), and take photos (KKW), naturally. Celebrities aside, KKW put the spotlight on a few fans, including three women: Myleeza, Brandi, and Maddison. Having famous friends who use their platform to promote a brand is beneficial, but its the loyal fans that make the Skims’ world go ’round.

«It’s wild to think that it’s already been one year since we launched SKIMS. I’m eternally grateful for the love and support that our customers have shown both me and the brand. I’ve loved seeing everyone’s photos in SKIMS and reading the comments on social media, and I wanted to use this time, the campaign, and customer gifting to really say thank you,» KKW said in a statement. «The customers are our inspiration for developing new ideas and collections and there is so much more to come.»

One year ago, KKW introduced Skims as her solution to the many years she was left frustrated trying to find shapewear with enough support. Skims launched in sizes XXS-4X (up to 5X in Solutionwear™ collection), various cup sizes, and nine flesh tone shades.

But KKW’s love for her customers doesn’t stop there. In tandem with the campaign’s release, KKW is also gifting 100 lucky customers pieces from the best-selling Solutionwear™ styles, exclusive SKIMS novelty items, and a note written by Kim Kardashian West herself. The full campaign launches on September 10. In the meantime, shop some of our favorite items below.
