Fashion designers are putting politics on their sleeves. Ahead of the 2020 presidential election in November, many have released merchandise—from Michael Kors to Nili Lotan—that encourages citizens to perform their civic duty and vote. Indeed, going out to the polls and filling out your ballots are pivotal: Choosing who leads the nation is something that the masses shouldn’t take lightly. And for 19 designers from 17 brands, Joseph Biden is the only reasonable candidate in the running.
Today, the Biden Victory Fund released an assortment of voter merch that enlisted the talents of some of the most celebrated designers: Brother Vellies’s Aurora James, Proenza Schouler’s Lazaro Hernandez and Jack McCollough, Edie Parker’s Brett Heyman, Gabriela Hearst, Thom Browne, Joseph Altuzarra, Tory Burch, Jonathan Cohen, Carly Cushnie, Kathryn and Lizzie Fortunato, Victor Glemaud, Prabal Gurung, Thakoon Panichgul, Monique Péan, Joe Perez, Vera Wang, and Jason Wu. Titled Believe in Better, the collection offers pieces that show support for the Biden-and-Kamala Harris ticket.
“We are thrilled to announce this collection of affordable merchandise designed by a diverse group of talented American fashion designers and made in America,” said Rufus Gifford, Biden’s deputy campaign manager, in a statement. “We are in a battle to restore the soul of our nation, and we’re seeing Americans across the country come together in a variety of ways to support Joe Biden and Kamala Harris because they are the leaders we need to heal and unite the country. I thank these designers for volunteering their time and talents to help win this election and the hardworking people who brought these designs to life.”
From a mask by Péan that reads, “Unity,” to a jumper by James that says, “We Make the Difference: Black Women for Biden/Harris 2020,” to a hoodie by Wang that has “Vote Joe” emblazoned on the front, a large part of the American fashion community are proclaiming their politics loud and clear. They see how the nation is suffering under the Trump presidency and the derision he has caused in his almost-four years in office, and they are backing the candidate who they believe is the best option for the country.
